She controlled hers with shots for a couple of decades, but it got harder and harder for her to do it, with more and more shots per day. The pump made it a lot easier and did a much better job of doling it out when she really needed it.
And, yes, she is. She's in her sixties and going strong. A real contrast to my uncle, who died back in the 1950s in his thirties from complications from diabetes. The treatments have come a long, long way since then.
