This is beyond nifty. I drove through the UP as part of a 14,000 mile solo cross-country trip fourteen years ago, and it was beautiful. You're bringing back good memories.

Tell your friend that he probably wants to avoid the Astoria-Megler bridge at the mouth of the Columbia River, too. Very similar, if not quite so long. The last time I went over it, they were working on the bridge, and I ended up sitting almost at the very top for about fifteen minutes. Since I'm not overly fond of manmade heights (natural heights don't seem to bother me), this was not exactly comfortable.
