Your story reminds me of a friend of mine who's ADD, and has occasionally been challenged that "You can't be ADD because you're a writer, and if you've finished a novel (let alone a half-dozen) then you're obviously not ADD!!!"
Well, no. He's done a lot of work learning to manage and adapt to the challenges of that condition. It sounds like you've done some of the same sort of work.
