I run into this when I'm out and about with my camera gear. Folks see my tripod and ask if I'm a professional photographer. "Why, yes!" I say, and hand them a business card. Inevitably, they will ask me where they might have seen my work. "I do fine art nature photography," I explain, "and I'm just getting started, so I haven't gotten published yet." "Oh," they say, and wander off.
(Also, my Web site is currently down, but that hadn't happened yet the last time I had this conversation. Guess I better fix it before the next one, day job allowing. :) )
Must be the day for it. My web site crashed shortly after the comic went live. Very annoying to have people tweeting links to my site, only to get a 500 error.
Yeah ... it's frustrating. But hey, photography is just like writing, right? I mean, anyone can do it!

Exactly!
Man, you should have seen me at my first photography workshop. The pictures I showed for critiques...You know how most people dream about going to school in their underwear? I dream about asking real professional photographers what they think of those pictures. Keeps me from feeling too* superior to the folks I see waving their cameras around with obviously no idea what they're doing with them. :)
*Of course, I get to be the final arbiter of what constitutes "just superior enough".
