Wordpress and Blogger and Dreamwidth and a couple of comments sections have eaten my words at one time or another, presumably so I won't have to.

Yes, and this is why I write my blog posts in a word processor, then copy and paste them into WordPress. A lesson learned the hard way.

I too have felt this pain, especially on my tablet. When it's happened, what I write to replace it is often better.
