One of my most productive writing periods ever was the spring of my senior year of college, after I'd turned in my thesis. By then I'd been accepted into grad school, so my coursework didn't matter much anymore, but my classes gave me just enough structure to keep me from frittering my time away with nothing much. The layperson might expect me to write more once I went full-time, but no -- the combination of no structure + being responsible for my own domestic upkeep actually made it harder.
Very few of us, I think, can fairly compare ourselves to the us of the X-distant past. Circumstances change, and so does our ability to roll with them.
